Fantasy Friday: Week 2

Week 1 didn’t go as well as I hoped.

95 until infinity (0-1)

This was, by far, my worst showing of the week. My team only scored 59 points. Thanks Adrian Peterson (3 points), Dez Bryant (0 points) and Brandon Marshall (3 points). These were 3 of my first 4 picks and somehow they could only mustered 6 points combined. I also made the mistake of playing Frank Gore (6 points) over either C.J. Anderson (25 points) or Theo Riddick (22 points). I was a little wary of starting Kelvin Benjamin because he missed the entire 2015 season with an ACL injury and wasn’t sure if he would be effective in his 1st game in over a year. Luckily, he looked quite mobile & agile and showed no negative effects of the ACL (15 points). Going forward I have high hopes Cam Newton continues to look his way, especially in the red-zone.

Week 2 is already off to a good start with Brandon Marshall putting up some very good numbers on Thursday Night Football (10 points). I’m also betting (more like hoping) AP and Dez redeem themselves this week. Philip Rivers lost his most talented receiver, Keenan Allen, and had a pedestrian Week 1 (13 points), but has a tasty match-up with a young Jacksonville Jaguars defense. C’mon Rivers! You have 8 kids to feed and put through college, time to earn that paycheck! I will not make the same mistake twice and have placed C.J. Anderson into the RB2 slot with the hopes he shreds the Colts defense. He was the only change I made from Week 1.

Springfield Isotopes (0-1)

I also lost this match-up, but not due to making any egregious lineup errors. LeSean McCoy (12 points) and DeAngelo Williams (28 points) put up superb numbers, but I left Carlos Hyde (20 points) on the bench. I started Julio Jones (12 points) and Allen Robinson (7 points), but Willie Snead had himself one helluva game (23 points). While I could have started either Hyde or Snead I instead went with Randall Cobb in the flex position. I just flat out liked Cobb’s match-up against the Jaguars over Hyde’s match-up against the, supposedly, stout LA Rams defense (whoops). Truthfully, I didn’t see this Willie Snead performance coming. Gary Barnidge (0 points) was woefully underutilized in Cleveland’s opening game. Which was a problem because he’s my only TE, but with RG3 going down to injury, Josh McCown steps into the starting role. Many fantasy experts have predicted this switch in QB’s will actually benefit Barnidge.

Going into Week 2 I haven’t swapped Cobb out for anyone yet and am still on the fence about a switch. I’m not thrilled with San Francisco’s match-up against Carolina. I sense Week 1 was a bit of a wake-up call and the Panthers will be out for blood against the Niners. Making me apprehensive about starting Carlos Hyde. Willie Snead is the guy I’m most thinking about interchanging with Cobb. The Saints play a Giants defense, who didn’t play poorly against Dallas in Week 1, but did play against Rayne Dakota Prescott, who was making his 1st NFL start. Going up against Drew Brees, a seasoned QB who has full control over an NFL offense, will present a much tougher challenge for the G-Men. Now that I think about it, I’m going to start Snead over Randall Cobb.

Tom’s Deflated Ball’s (1-0)

Hurrah! This was my lone win of the week. I was afforded production up and down my roster. Andrew Luck balled out (35 points) against Detroit, David Johnson was held to a sub-100-yard rushing day yet still almost scored 20 (18) points and Amari Cooper poo-pooed any notion of a sophomore slump (15 points). I was also pleasantly surprised with Isaiah Crowell’s performance (13 points).

Apparently, I’m all-in on Brandon Marshall in 2016 (as I drafted him in 2 of my leagues) and believe his poor Week 1 performance was due to playing a ferocious Cincinnati defense. I’m worried this might be the season Frank Gore runs out of steam. At 33, he is one of, if not the, oldest starting RB in the NFL and that worries me. What doesn’t worry me is I have not a single clue who the backup RB for the Colts (oh shit, its former Seahawks RB Robert Turbin). Guess I shouldn’t fear the hook Frank being replaced by a younger back. With that said, I’m benching him this week in favor of Jags RB T.J. Yeldon. I like his matchup against the Chargers. If Alex “check-down” Smith can throw for 363 yards and 2 TD’s against them I have a feeling a much higher powered offense like Jacksonville will have an offensive explosion. I’m once again going to roll the dice starting Isaiah Crowell. I have zero feel for the Browns and hope Hue Jackson keeps feeding him the ball.

As this is only Week 2, I haven’t really thought about mixing it up and trading any players. I want to see how my picks perform this early in the season. With most teams being healthy I haven’t felt the need to scour the waiver wire quite yet. I do have a few players who I’m monitoring in case of injuries or continuing poor performances. Let’s hope Week 2 affords me more success!
